NATO and European Union officials have strongly condemned Russia following an incident in which a Russian drone struck a residential building in Romania, a member state of the Western military alliance. The episode has deepened concerns about the widening geographic reach of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine and the risk of its violence spilling into NATO territory.
What Happened
Romanian authorities confirmed that debris from a Russian drone — almost certainly intercepted by Ukrainian air defence systems — changed course after being hit and came down on a residential block in the country’s eastern region near the Ukrainian border. Romania’s defence ministry stated that the drone was originally launched as part of a broader Russian aerial assault on Ukrainian territory before it was struck mid-flight.
Emergency services were dispatched to the affected area and residents were temporarily evacuated as a precaution. Initial assessments indicated structural damage to the building, though there were no immediate reports of fatalities from the impact.
