Rescue teams in Laos have successfully extracted the first of five men who had been trapped inside a flooded cave for nine days, officials confirmed on Friday. The man emerged visibly exhausted but alive, marking the beginning of what authorities hope will be a full rescue operation for all those stranded in the cavern.
The Rescue Operation
The survivor was led to safety by a team of experienced rescue divers who navigated through partially submerged tunnels and narrow passages to reach the group. Local authorities, supported by international technical diving experts, have been working around the clock since the men became trapped following an unexpected rise in water levels inside the cave system.
Medical personnel stationed at the cave entrance immediately assessed the rescued man’s condition. While weakened by the ordeal, he was reported to be in stable health and was transferred to a nearby medical facility for further evaluation and care. His family, who had maintained a vigil near the site throughout the rescue effort, were reunited with him following his emergence.
The Remaining Survivors
Four men remain inside the cave, and rescue coordinators said they were continuing to work methodically to bring them out one by one. Officials stressed that the pace of the operation was dictated by safety considerations, both for the survivors and for the divers navigating the challenging subterranean conditions.
Communication with the group had been established earlier in the rescue effort, allowing teams to provide the trapped men with food, water, and basic medical supplies. Authorities said the remaining survivors were aware that the rescue was under way and had been kept informed of progress.

The incident inevitably drew comparisons to the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in neighbouring Thailand, in which twelve young footballers and their coach were saved after spending more than two weeks underground. That operation captivated global audiences and demonstrated the extraordinary lengths that rescue teams can achieve under pressure.
Laotian officials said they had drawn on lessons from past cave rescue operations in planning their response. International diving specialists with experience in complex subterranean rescues were among those called in to assist the local teams.
As the operation continued, relief was palpable among those gathered at the cave entrance. With the first man safely out, attention now turns to the careful and methodical task of bringing the remaining four survivors home.
