Rescue teams in Laos celebrated a hard-won victory on Friday as the first of five men found alive inside a flooded cave was successfully brought out to safety after nine agonising days stranded underground. The bedraggled survivor was led to freedom by a team of rescuers who had been working around the clock in treacherous conditions to reach the trapped individuals.
How the Ordeal Began
The five men became trapped inside the cavern system approximately nine days ago when unexpected flooding cut off their exit route. Officials confirmed that rising water levels inside the cave made immediate extraction impossible and forced rescuers to devise a careful, staged operation.
The situation drew immediate comparisons to the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in neighbouring Thailand, in which 12 boys and their football coach were dramatically saved after more than two weeks underground — an operation that captivated the world and involved hundreds of international rescuers and divers.
The Rescue Operation
