Russia unleashed one of its most devastating overnight assaults on Ukrainian cities in recent months, firing a barrage of missiles and drones that tore through residential neighbourhoods and left emergency crews scrambling to pull survivors from the rubble. Ukrainian officials confirmed that at least 14 people were killed and dozens more were injured in the strikes, which targeted multiple regions simultaneously in the early hours of Tuesday.
Cities Across Ukraine Hit Simultaneously
The attacks sent residents racing for shelter as air raid sirens wailed throughout the night. Rescue teams worked by torchlight to reach people feared trapped beneath collapsed buildings, with excavators clearing debris while medical personnel tended to the wounded on the streets. Authorities warned the death toll could rise as search and rescue operations continued into the morning hours.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes in a statement, calling the assault a deliberate attempt to terrorise civilians and erode the country’s resolve. He renewed urgent appeals to Western allies to accelerate the delivery of advanced air defence systems capable of intercepting the projectiles used in the attack.
Widespread Destruction Reported
Footage shared by local officials and emergency services showed fires burning at multiple sites, with apartment blocks reduced to skeletal facades and streets littered with debris. Widespread power outages were reported across affected areas as critical infrastructure sustained significant damage. Utility repair crews were deployed alongside emergency responders, though authorities cautioned that full restoration of services would take considerable time.
The scale of the assault drew swift condemnation from European leaders. Several governments called for an emergency review of security commitments to Kyiv, while NATO described the bombardment as a stark illustration of Russia’s continued aggression and the pressing need for sustained allied support.
Diplomatic Efforts Remain Stalled
The overnight bombardment comes as international attempts to broker a ceasefire remain deadlocked. Russia has consistently denied deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, characterising its strikes as responses to what it describes as Ukrainian military provocations. Independent observers and Ukrainian authorities, however, have consistently documented a pattern of attacks concentrated on populated areas and essential services.
Relief agencies operating in the affected regions appealed for additional resources as displaced residents sought emergency shelter. Hospitals in nearby cities were placed on heightened alert to receive casualties, and temporary accommodation was established in schools and community centres for those whose homes were destroyed. The United Nations has warned that repeated large-scale attacks are compounding an already severe humanitarian crisis affecting millions of Ukrainians.
