Russia launched one of its most devastating overnight missile and drone barrages against Ukraine on Tuesday, killing at least 14 people and wounding dozens more as rescuers raced to pull survivors from the rubble of collapsed buildings across multiple cities.
Cities Across Ukraine Targeted
The coordinated assault, which began in the early hours of Tuesday morning, struck residential areas in several Ukrainian cities simultaneously. Emergency services scrambled to multiple sites as fires broke out and buildings were reduced to rubble. Rescue teams worked through the night using heavy equipment and search dogs to locate survivors trapped beneath collapsed structures.
Ukrainian officials confirmed that the death toll stood at a minimum of 14, though authorities warned the number was expected to rise as rescue operations continued. Dozens more were hospitalised with injuries ranging from minor cuts to critical wounds.
Missiles and Drones Deployed Together
Ukrainian air defence forces said they intercepted a significant number of the incoming projectiles, but enough broke through to cause widespread destruction. The attack combined ballistic missiles with a large wave of Shahed-type drones — a tactic Moscow has employed repeatedly to overwhelm air defence systems by targeting them from multiple directions at once.
Footage shared on social media showed smoke rising over residential neighbourhoods, with firefighters battling blazes in apartment blocks. Local governors urged residents to remain in shelters and warned that further strikes could follow.
International Reaction
The attack drew swift condemnation from Western capitals. A spokesperson for the European Union called the overnight strikes “a brutal assault on civilian infrastructure and lives,” reiterating calls for accountability. Ukraine’s president appealed once again to allies for additional air defence systems, arguing that enhanced protection remained the most critical immediate need for Ukrainian cities.
The United Nations humanitarian office said it was monitoring the situation and expressed concern about access for aid workers in affected areas.
Context of the Conflict
Tuesday’s attack came amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to find a path toward a ceasefire, with international mediators continuing talks between the warring parties. Despite those efforts, military activity along the front lines and deep-strike operations against Ukrainian cities have continued unabated. The conflict, now in its fifth year, shows no immediate signs of abating, with both sides continuing to sustain significant casualties.
Rescue operations were expected to continue for several hours, with local officials warning that some structures remained unstable. Residents in the worst-affected areas were advised to evacuate as a precaution while emergency crews completed their assessments.
