Dozens Killed in Lebanon as Israel Escalates Strikes on Hezbollah

Israeli military forces have dramatically intensified their aerial campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon, striking more than 100 infrastructure sites and fighter positions in a single day, according to statements released by the Israeli Defence Forces. The operation has left dozens dead and many more wounded, marking one of the most significant escalations in the conflict in recent months.

Netanyahu Pledges to Crush Hezbollah

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the military would not cease operations until Hezbollah was decisively weakened. In an address to the nation, the prime minister framed the campaign as a necessary step toward restoring security in northern Israel, where tens of thousands of residents have been displaced from their homes due to sustained cross-border rocket and drone fire from the Lebanese militant group.

The Israeli military confirmed that targets included weapons storage facilities, command and control nodes, and forward staging areas used by Hezbollah fighters. The IDF stated that precision munitions were used to minimise collateral damage, though Lebanese officials dispute these claims in light of the reported civilian casualties.

Lebanon Reports Mounting Civilian Toll

Lebanese health authorities confirmed significant casualties across multiple communities in the country’s south and east, with emergency services overwhelmed by the scale of the bombardment. Hospitals reported receiving large numbers of wounded, including civilians. Infrastructure damage, including roads, bridges, and communication links, was also reported in affected areas, complicating relief efforts.

Hezbollah confirmed losses among its ranks but vowed to escalate retaliatory strikes against Israeli territory. The Iran-backed group, which exercises considerable political and military influence within Lebanon, has been engaged in near-daily cross-border hostilities with Israel since late 2023.

Diplomatic Pressure Mounts

The international community reacted with alarm to the latest escalation. The United Nations Secretary-General urged both parties to immediately halt hostilities, warning that continued military action risked triggering a broader regional catastrophe. France, which has historically maintained close ties with Lebanon, summoned the Israeli ambassador in Paris to express its grave concern over civilian casualties and the scale of the military operation.

The United States reiterated its support for Israel’s right to defend itself while calling for proportionality in military action and greater protection of civilian lives. American diplomatic teams have been engaged in behind-the-scenes efforts to contain the escalation and prevent a full-scale regional war.

Meanwhile, Lebanon’s already fragile government faces renewed pressure as the country — still reeling from years of economic crisis and political paralysis — confronts the prospect of another devastating conflict on its soil. Analysts warn that without urgent diplomatic intervention, the current trajectory could push Lebanon and the wider region into unprecedented instability.
