WHO Warns of Catastrophic Collision of Ebola and Conflict in DR Congo

The World Health Organization has issued an urgent warning about the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, describing a potentially catastrophic convergence of the deadly Ebola virus and ongoing armed conflict. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasised that fighting across the country is severely hampering efforts to contain the outbreak and protect vulnerable communities.

A Crisis Within a Crisis

The DRC has long been one of the world’s most challenging environments for disease containment. The country has battled more Ebola outbreaks than any other nation, and health workers have repeatedly faced the dual challenge of fighting a deadly virus while navigating active conflict zones. The latest outbreak is unfolding against a backdrop of particularly intense fighting, with multiple armed groups active across the eastern part of the country.

According to WHO officials, health teams have been unable to access several affected communities due to road blockades, active hostilities, and threats against medical personnel. Contact tracing — a critical tool in breaking Ebola’s chain of transmission — has been severely disrupted, raising fears that the virus is spreading silently into unreachable areas.

Strained Health Infrastructure

The conflict has devastated the country’s already fragile health infrastructure. Hospitals and clinics in affected regions have been damaged or destroyed by fighting, and many health workers have fled or been displaced. The result is a gaping hole in the country’s capacity to respond to any health emergency, let alone one as complex as Ebola.

Tedros called on all parties to the conflict to allow unhindered humanitarian access. He stressed that the international community must not allow geopolitical considerations or donor fatigue to diminish the response to what is rapidly becoming a humanitarian catastrophe.

International Response

Several international health organisations and donor governments have pledged additional resources to support the Ebola response in the DRC. However, experts caution that funding alone is insufficient without the security conditions necessary to deploy personnel and deliver supplies. The WHO has called for a coordinated global response that addresses both the public health emergency and the underlying conflict driving it.
