Bangladesh is facing one of its most severe measles outbreaks in recent memory, with health authorities reporting more than 60,000 suspected cases of the highly contagious disease in just over two months. The crisis has claimed the lives of hundreds of children, prompting urgent calls from international health organisations for an accelerated vaccination campaign.
Scale of the Outbreak
The Directorate General of Health Services in Bangladesh confirmed that suspected measles cases had been recorded across most districts, with rural and peri-urban areas disproportionately affected. Children under five years of age have been the most vulnerable group, accounting for the majority of fatalities. Experts attribute the surge to a significant drop in vaccination coverage in recent years, a problem worsened by disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and post-pandemic health service gaps.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF have deployed teams to support Bangladesh’s government in responding to the outbreak. Emergency vaccination drives have been launched in the hardest-hit districts, with health workers fanning out to schools, communities, and remote villages to administer the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.
Root Causes
Public health officials point to a combination of factors driving the crisis. Routine childhood immunisation rates in Bangladesh declined markedly during the pandemic, leaving a significant cohort of young children without protection. Misinformation about vaccine safety, spread partly through social media, has also deterred some families from seeking immunisation for their children.
A WHO spokesperson in Dhaka noted that the measles virus exploits any gap in herd immunity, and when vaccination coverage drops below the threshold needed to stop transmission, the disease spreads rapidly — with children paying the heaviest price.
International Response
The outbreak has drawn an international response, with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, fast-tracking supplies of the MMR vaccine to Bangladesh. The government has appealed to neighbouring countries and global partners for logistical and financial support to contain the spread before the outbreak reaches further populations.
Health workers on the ground describe overwhelmed clinic facilities and desperate parents bringing critically ill children for treatment. In several severely affected districts, makeshift treatment centres have been established to handle the influx of patients.
Medical authorities urge families throughout Bangladesh to ensure their children are vaccinated without delay, emphasising that measles is entirely preventable. Officials have warned that the country risks further preventable deaths if vaccination rates are not rapidly restored to pre-pandemic levels.
