Russia launched a significant military strike against Ukraine on Sunday, leaving at least four people dead and dozens more injured. The attack, one of the most intense in recent weeks, saw the use of the Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile — a weapon capable of travelling at more than ten times the speed of sound — marking a serious escalation in the ongoing conflict.
Devastating Assault Across Multiple Regions
Ukrainian emergency services confirmed fatalities and widespread damage resulting from the coordinated strike. Rescue teams were deployed to multiple locations as fires broke out and infrastructure was struck across affected areas. Dozens of civilians were reported injured, with some casualties described as serious.
The Oreshnik missile — which Russian officials have previously boasted is capable of evading Western missile defence systems — was confirmed to have been deployed in the assault. The weapon travels at hypersonic speed, giving defenders minimal time to respond once it is launched.
Moscow Confirms Missile Use
Russian authorities confirmed the deployment of the Oreshnik as part of Sunday’s strikes. The missile, which can carry multiple warheads, had previously been used in limited engagements but its latest deployment represents one of the most prominent uses of the weapon since Russia began expanding its missile arsenal.
The Kremlin issued a brief statement justifying the attack as a response to what it described as Ukrainian aggression, though Ukrainian officials strongly rejected these claims. Kyiv condemned the strikes and called on international allies to accelerate the delivery of advanced air defence systems.
Ukraine Vows to Respond
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for an emergency session of the country’s security council following the attacks. In a statement, he urged Western partners to lift remaining restrictions on long-range strikes inside Russian territory.
“Every missile that falls on our cities demands a response,” Zelensky said, urging accelerated military aid. Ukraine’s air force said it had intercepted a number of incoming projectiles, but acknowledged that some had broken through existing defences.
International Reaction
The attacks drew immediate condemnation from European leaders and the United States. NATO Secretary General called the strikes “a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law” and called on Russia to halt its offensive operations. Several European nations pledged to expedite the dispatch of additional air defence systems to Ukraine.
Analysts noted that the use of the Oreshnik missile in a large-scale attack signals Russia’s intent to maintain pressure on Ukraine despite ongoing diplomatic efforts. The coming days are expected to see further international discussions on how best to support Ukraine’s defence as the conflict shows no sign of imminent resolution.
